Chapter History

We were originally founded in 1903 as a local fraternity at Dartmouth College named Chi Tau Kappa, and in 1908, we affiliated ourselves with the national fraternity Sigma Alpha Epsilon and became the New Hampshire Alpha Chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. The national Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity was founded in 1856 and boasts the largest membership of any fraternity in the world with more than 228 active chapters 14 colonies in 49 states and Canada and more than 14,000 undergraduate brothers affiliated.

We are one of the few Greek organizations on campus that still own its own physical plant. Our current house was built in 1933 and rests on the eastern side of the Baker-Berry library. To this day it is the only Greek house on campus that was built specifically for the purpose of being a fraternity's physical plant. It has three floors that include two singles, two doubles, and four triples. The house also boasts a large Oak-wood living room with a large projector and surround sound in addition to a brand-new kitchen and a brothers-only Chapter Room on the third floor. Moreover, the fraternity occupies one of the largest Greek-house lots on campus, and SAE brothers recently constructed an elaborate backyard fire pit and patio as part of a brotherhood-development project.
